BATS: Building Technology, Creating Markets

NYSE: Operating Markets, Applying Technology

It's easy to think of NYSE Euronext as an operator of securities markets. It certainly is the longest-standing, getting its start in 1792. As recently as 2002, its New York Stock Exchange, now referred to as NYSE Classic, accounted for 82 percent of trading in equities on the consolidated tape.

Calpers Goes for Algos as Block Trading Wavers

High stock-market volatility in 2008 and 2009 pummeled trading in large blocks of shares. But even though the market has calmed down, block trades handled by dark crossing venues and individual sales traders may never fully return.
