Fidelis Security Systems on Tuesday announced the addition of a mechanism to track the flow of information in networks to its primary product for preventing cyber attacks and leakage of data.

The Waltham, MA-based network security software supplier said it added the  Information Flow Map feature to its Fidelis Extrusion Prevention System, “making it the first network security solution to bring together knowledge of network flow, application, and transmitted data in a real-time visual map,” the company said in a release.

The mapping feature allows managers to see all information flowing on a network and control that flow, Fidelis said.

Fidelis uses a process it calls Deep Session Inspection, which determines what kinds of data are flowing across networks, such as video, streams of market data or the like. The mapping occurs in real-time on networks that are handling billions of bits of data a second.

“Fidelis XPS Information Flow Map enables organizations to take the knowledge of their network beyond mere ‘alerts’ to an actual understanding of how information is being circulated inside their enterprises and where it is going outside the network,”  Fidelis said.

"The value of bringing visualization to network information flow gives an organization the opportunity to find and remediate issues ranging from broken business processes to security incidents, resulting in much greater protection for their information," said Eric Ouellet, a vice president at computer industry research firm Gartner.
