Equinix Opens Second Data Center in Geneva

March 17, 2010

Equinix opened the first part of its second data center in Geneva.

The construction adds 380 cabinets of storage capacity in the Swiss city. A second phase will add another 380.

This more than doubles the capacity of its International Busienss Exchange footprint there.

All told, Equinix now operates five data centers in Switzerland, with three located in Zurich. A fourth Zurich center will be opened by the end of June.

“Geneva is a very strategic market for Equinix,” said Eric Schwartz, president of Equinix in Europe. “Not only is there growing local demand for high specification data center services – particularly from the city’s financial sector – the city’s location between Northern and Southern Europe means it is a key peering point for a increasing number of network operators.”

The GV2 IBX data center is part of Equinix’s $1.4 billion 2007-2010 global expansion plan.

A month ago, Equinix opened new data centers in Frankfurt and Dusseldorf, and announced plans to expand its existing Frankfurt center.
